Over the last week or so my car has has been shaking andsputtering really badly. At first it only did it at stops or in traffic. Then it is been doing it routinly. l had a new fuel filter and plugs installed but it got worse as time went on. If anybody out there knows these type of cars or a possible diagnosis, l would love to hear from you. l really need help figuring this out. thankyou.

Sounds like you may have either a bad catalytic converter or oxygen sensor or both or a sticky valve.I'd try cleaning the carburetor with a special cleaner spray you can buy for about 8 or 10.00, plus checking the vac lines and also having a free exhaust check done too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way check the PCV valve and if the shop says the catalytic converter is faulty do not forget to replace the oxygen sensor too but check around for prices.

Your car has fuel injection not a carburetor!

I've never seen a PCV valve on a BMW. At least not like u find on an American car. They have a crankcase vent with an oil separator. l am not sure about an '84 though. Oldest I've seen is an '86.

Do not go spraying cleaner all over the place. Figure out what is broken.

You need to do an orderly diagnosis.



I'd start by checking compression. Make sure the basic engine is still ok. Have u ever adjusted the valves?
Then look for vacuum leaks.
Then check the fuel system.
Then check the ignition.

l think you've got the Jetronic 1.1 software on the injector computer.

I'd bank on 02 sensor. The cats will set you back about 1100 for all of them.
