I have never had an autogearbox. Thinking of buying a second hand 318 with 65K on clock. Any horror stories

The 318i is no longer imported into the US. If u r in Europe or GB, the 318i, 318is, & 323i r much more popular than the larger engine models that came to the US during & after the 1990s; like the 325i, the 328i, the 330ci, & all the M-3s that came after the 240HP 1995 M-3. Parts, services, & diagnostics can sometimes be difficult if the car with an AT was built before the OBD-I l came out in 1996. 65K miles is not much for a 10 year old car, but check to see if the warranty has run out.

Usually auto transmission require some major services by 100k.

So yours should be good. l would recommend fresh fluid and filter.

There was a bad batch of automatics in the 1999-2000 323i/ci in the USA which failed between 50k - 100k miles.

Not sure about ur model year since u did not state them.

Automatics r more costly to maintain. simply because it is a more complex mechanism.

With manuals, u will probably need to change a dry clutch once every 170,000 miles or so. But with automatics, other than fluid/filter change, if it fails, u will be minimally looking at a rebuild.

Still, many will buy automatics for the convenience of not shifting; especially in traffic jams.

Do ur research in BMW online forums for ur model year.

if your clock says 65K its broken..
