l drove it about 400 mls and it used 6 liters of engin oil, also the engine light came on, also sometimes when you drop down to third gear the car shakes like there isnt enough power. l have an idea wat it is but wanna get someone elses opinion, the car apart from that drives perfectly when the oil is topped up, not a buge out of is, beauty of a car, it has 115,000 mls thanks.
i am buying the car for €3,000, is it a head gasket/engine problem, no oil on the drive-wayall, the car really does drive well, but no use if l keep puting oil in it, l have reed on some BMW Forums that the 520 2.2 petrol does use alot of oil though?

If it is consuming 6L of oil in 400 miles then it is clearly about to go bang, is not it.

The engine is knackered. Probably why it was being sold privately. Was it cheap as well? It is done 115,000 miles, so it is come to the end of its life.

The car will break down, soon. If it takes more oil than petrol to drive it, dont buy it.

6L of oil in 400 miles, Its either burning it or its leaking out, l would stay well away from this car do not buy it,

P.s If the oil is not leaking out then it is most likely getting burnt which would indicate that the head gasket is gone, Even if they normally use alot of oil 6L is way too much, as l said before walk away while you still can as much you like the car wait till you find a better example

l hate to say it, but l agree with all the other contributors here, if it is using that much oil then the answer has to be FORGET IT!

no car should use that amount of oil that quickly, you want my advice, leave it well alone and shop around for a better deal, that car is a heap of junk.

P.S. That is also a lot of mileage for a car of that age.

Save your money!! The engine is ''shagged''. Usually they are just ''run in'' at that distance, but there is a problem.
It may seem high mileage, but if serviced regularly, there is no reason they cannot go on for over 200000 miles without problem.

DO NOT BUY!!!

Some BMW is use a lot of oil (up to 2 litres over 1,000 miles) but 6 litres over 400 to 500 miles means one thing. It is knackered!!

If you do decide to buy it, using AMETECH RESTORE OIL (from e-bay) may help but do not count on it.

Walk away, get one that does not use so much oil, there are plenty to choose from,
